Granite State College’s Alumni & Friends Scholarship for the 2022 Summer Term was recently awarded to two deserving students: Shannon Champagne and Maggie Phillips.

Applicants were asked to submit an essay about their experiences, motivations, goals, and any special circumstances related to their educational goals.

Shannon is the first person in her family to attend college. While working as a cashier, Shannon decided she wanted to go to college to provide her three children a different upbringing than she experienced. In January 2019, Shannon enrolled in college and earned an associate degree. From there, she enrolled in the B.S. in Psychology at Granite State College and discovered a love for social science.

Shannon’s goal is to become a licensed clinical counselor.

“My degree will help me to provide my children with the life they deserve, it will allow me to rise above my own struggles, and hopefully my future career will enable me to pay it back by helping others overcome their own mental health problems.”

Maggie’s decision to work with the senior community began when she saw how seniors were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was then Maggie decided she wanted to work to make a difference in her community. She chose to work with New Hampshire’s Foster Grandparent Program, a program that pairs low-income seniors with stipend volunteer opportunities within local schools. Maggie is currently enrolled in the B.S. in Human Services program and hopes to become a Geriatric Case Manager.

“I believe in the power of education, and am driven to continue my journey by the increasing need I see in the gerontological field.”

The Alumni & Friends Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible Granite State College students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Criteria for selection includes full-time or part-time enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program, having completed a minimum of 12 credits and two terms, and demonstrating need level as determined by FAFSA.
