Granite State College’s Alumni & Friends Scholarship for the 2022 Fall Term was recently awarded to three deserving students: Jennifer Burke-Guptill, Lou Aloise, and Fiorda Perez.
Applicants were asked to submit an essay about their experiences, motivations, goals, and any special circumstances related to their educational goals.
Jennifer made the courageous decision to earn her degree online while working full time as a paraprofessional and parenting a newborn daughter. She knew that Granite State College specializes in supporting busy adult students like her. In 2021, Jennifer graduated with an A.S. in Behavioral Science. She started a new career as a behavioral specialist and is a few classes away from obtaining her B.S. in Psychology.
“My growing career and longing to provide for my family continue to motivate me as the finish line draws near. I am eager and overjoyed for the upcoming year’s commencement. What I have learned at Granite State has already changed my life and other lives and will continue to do so in the future.”
Lou began his college journey at a traditional four-year college but had to pause his education due to challenging personal circumstances. When he was ready to finish his degree, Lou decided to enroll in Granite State College’s B.A. in Individualized Studies program. Now, he is projected to graduate this fall with plans to earn his master’s degree and become a history teacher.
“I have performed better here than anywhere else I have studied. This is because Granite State is perfect for a learner like me. I work full-time and have always worked full-time while attending classes.”
Fiorda is a first-generation college student and the daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic and Honduras. She said the enrolling at Granite State College is part of fulfilling her family’s American dream. Fiorda, who began nursing school when her son was 2 months old, is now working toward her B.S. in Nursing (BSN) with the goal of transitioning to a critical care role.
“Managing a career, and motherhood, has not been an easy road but my son has motivated me even more to progress my education in nursing.”
The Alumni & Friends Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible Granite State College students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Criteria for selection includes full-time or part-time enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program, having completed a minimum of 12 credits and two terms, and demonstrating need level as determined by FAFSA.
