June 8, 2020

The Granite State College Alumni & Friends Scholarship was recently awarded to four deserving students whom exemplify what it means to be “strong as granite.” Students Kelly Fontaine, Brittany Gilmore, Kate Lalonde, and Patrick Weaver were the chosen recipients for Spring Term.

Kelly is a current student earning her B.S. in Psychology from Exeter, NH.  A single mom of three children, Kelly decided to return to school to make a better life for her and her kids.

After meeting with academic advisor Katherine Acker ’14. they spoke about Kelly’s life, goals, and which classes would be an ideal fit. In her essay, Kelly shared “I have always been a caretaker and a listener; empathizing with others comes naturally to me. I need to learn and to share what I learn with others who would benefit. I want to show my kids that mom can do this. I want my daughters to grow up knowing their mom was a hard worker who busted her butt to make sure we have a future. I want my son to see that women can do anything.”

Brittany is currently pursuing her B.S. in Health Care Management while working in business development for a health tech start up that aims to educate underserved members of the healthcare system. She has been attending college as her busy schedule allows since 2008 and is set to graduate this fall. Brittany describes her motivation, “Finishing school will allow me to get over the bumps in the road that I have overcome thus far, and allow me to improve my life greatly, while setting an example as someone for my younger brother to look up to.” Upon graduating, Brittany will be the first in her family to have earned a college degree.

Kate is pursuing her B.S. in Early Childhood Education / Early Childhood Special Education.  In addition to being a student, working with children in licensed child care centers, and caring for her two-year daughter, Kate will be the first in her immediate family to earn her degree. On finishing her degree, Kate shared in her essay “I want to set a good example for my daughter that with hard work and perseverance, anything can be accomplished. With further education, I can make a real difference for the young children in my town, and for my family.”

Patrick is pursuing a B.S. in Applied Students Management.  In 2019, he returned to school after an 11-year hiatus, during which he was working as a firefighter and raising three sons. Patrick shared in his essay, “Returning to finish my bachelor’s degree has been a lifelong goal of mine for personal and professional reasons. I was afforded the opportunity to transfer in prior learning credits through my extensive trainings held through local academy level classes and classes held at the national level through the National Fire Academy. With the goal of finishing my degree and obtaining the NFA’s Executive Fire Officer designation I will be able to balance my formal education with my years of experience in the fire service to lead an organization into the next generation and be equipped to handle hazards mitigation in the fire and emergency medical services industry.”

The Alumni & Friends Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible Granite State College students who are pursuing their bachelor’s degree.
