Financial aid refers to the range of federal, state, institutional and private programs (grants, loans, scholarships and work study) that assist with paying the cost of your education. The GSC Financial Aid team always strives to be a trusted source of financial aid information and provide admirable services to our students and their families. Every award is packaged with the student’s best interest in mind. We take, and will continue to take, great pride in serving our students with accessing financial aid and making a post-secondary education experience a reality.

File a FAFSA

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to apply for federal and state grants, loans and work study.

Step One: Apply for a PIN

A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is required to sign your FAFSA on-line. If you are a dependent student, meaning the parent section will be completed on the FAFSA, one of your parents must also apply for a PIN in order to sign. Any unsigned FAFSA is invalid. After applying for a PIN, it may take up to three business days to receive an e-mail notification of your request. To apply for a PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov

Step Two: Complete a FAFSA

When you receive your PIN, get a copy of your most recent federal income tax return(s), and go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to file your FAFSA. Please make sure the school code, 031013, for Granite State College is on the application. Remember to print out a hard copy of your FAFSA with the confirmation number for your records.

Submit an Institutional Application

The Institutional application is a Granite State College requirement that helps us customize your award package based on your wants and needs. This form also helps identify outside resources that affect your eligibility and notifies GSC of your selection for a Stafford Loan Lender if requesting loan aid.

Additional Requirements to Consider

If your FAFSA is selected for verification or contains conflicting information, then there will be additional requirements that need to be fulfilled before you are awarded.

Please check your WEBROCK account for any added requirements or contact the Financial Aid Office for further explanation or any questions and concerns you may have.

Verification is the process used by the US Department of Education to audit FAFSA submissions. You are required to submit all added document(s) before any financial aid may be reviewed and awarded. Document requirements may include a verification worksheet, federal tax return, W2 forms, a non-tax filer statements, etc.

If your FAFSA is missing or contains conflicting information, it may be considered to be invalid. Invalid FAFSAs require additional documentation to be submitted as well. Documents such as a copy of your drivers license, social security card, alien registration card or income verification form may be required.

You should receive an award letter within two weeks from the time you completed all your requirements correctly. The award letter will explain to you what funds have been awarded to cover the cost of your education.

Sign your Master Promissory Note
The Master Promissory Note (MPN) is the agreement between you and your lender regarding repayment terms for your federal loans. The MPN is only required once during your enrollment at Granite State College unless you change lenders by choice.

There are hundreds of lending institutions that administer the Stafford loan program. As the borrower, you have the right to select any lender you want. Although all Federal loans have the same interest rate and fees; some lenders offer benefits and discounts that may lower the total cost of your loan(s). Benefits can be broken down into two categories: front-end benefits and back-end benefits.

Front-end benefits include: a low or no origination fee, an online application process and/or electronic fund transmission for faster processing and disbursing of your money.

Back-end benefits include: a reduced interest rate after a certain number of consecutive on-time payments, an interest rate reduction for debit payments, online payment options and customer service.

How to begin a search for a lender that is right for you:

  • Contact your local bank for information
  • Ask a friend or family member that is in or was in college about who they used
  • Visit websites of known lenders to research offered benefits
  • Contact the financial aid office for further assistance at 888.228.3000 ext. 711.

Students are strongly encouraged to make an informed decision about who they choose to be their lender. Granite State College will never refuse to certify a loan from any student’s lender of choice.
