Selected Web Resources for Literature The links identified in this annotated list support research and writing in the field of literature. Voice of the Shuttle - VoS is a UC-hosted repository of annotated links to scholarly resources in the humanities. One of VoS's outstanding features is its comprehensive collection of literature resources. In addition to its broad scope and user-friendly format, it contains links and resources for teachers as well as students, from tutorials to lists of international English departments. Librarian's Internet Index - The Librarian's Internet Index features an impressive collection of humanities links, with emphasis on literature. In addition to links categorized by genre, author, period, and so on, this Index also provides annotated links to supplementary resources (VoS, for instance, is cross-referenced here, as are full-text-access sites like Bartleby Library). Internet Public Library - Literary Criticism Page - The IPL devotes a page to literary criticism links, organized by country, period, and genre. As the IPL itself points out, it should be used as a starting point for research, but it provides a decent overview of the types and scope of literary criticism. Indiana University Libraries - English & American Literature Page - The IUB hosts a wonderful collection of primary texts and critical writings in both English and American literature. In addition to comprehensive offerings from the English and American canons, it includes links to literature of the Caribbean, Australia, and New Zealand; it also features links to Yiddish and post-colonial studies. Washington State University - American Literature Resources Online - Dr. Donna Campbell of Washington State University maintains an extensive American literature website. The URL above brings you to her list of valuable websites for students of American literature (with a special focus on the 19th century) and of literature in general. Dr. Campbell's other web pages, which you can navigate to from the Links page, is a great resource in itself: it features timelines of American history and literature, indexes of notable authors, sample syllabi, and more. She also provides links to websites that provide access to full-text books online - very helpful! - plus a list of miscellaneous resources for students of literature, culture, history, and the humanities.
Selected Web Resources for Writing The links identified in this annotated list support research and writing. OWL - The Online Writing Lab of Purdue University - An incredibly comprehensive collection of handouts, tutorials, self-paced PowerPoint presentations, and workshops, OWL's website is also engaging, user-friendly, and frequently updated. As a whole, the site nicely addresses writing, research, and citation issues across the curriculum, and it also includes a helpful section on common English as a Second Language (ESL) issues. It's worth noting that its ESL guides are useful for all English speakers and writers due to their insightful, clear approach to language acquisition and usage. Dartmouth College - Writing Center - Like OWL, Dartmouth's Writing Center hosts a website addressing 3 crucial areas for students of writing and/or literature: a) writing as a process -- and in relation to multiple disciplines and citation formats, b) grammar and organization, and c) English as a Second Language (ESL). (As with OWL, Dartmouth's ESL sections are beneficial to both native and non-native speakers of English.) The site is designed for easy searching and offers handouts that are organized by topic and cross-referenced to relevant links and resources. Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) - ESL Resources - As part of its excellent Online Writing Lab (OWL), Purdue University features a comprehensive list of helpful links for students of English as a Second Language (ESL). The links are organized according to the following categories: General Resources; Online Courses; Grammar & Spelling; Idioms; Vocabulary; Help With Specific Tasks (such as Test Taking, Medical English, and Business English); Quizzes, Tests, Software, and Interactive Sites; and Conversations, E-mail Lists, Etc. Colorado State University - Writing Center - Colorado State University's online Writing Center offers interactive resources for students interested in creative writing as well as those seeking to improve their academic writing. CSU's site features Writing Guides, sample Writing Exercises, paced Writing Demonstrations, and Writing Practice for a range of writing formats - composition, business, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Bowling Green State University - Writing Center - Bowling Green State University's well-designed Writing Center website features a comprehensive Handouts section. Their printable handouts helpfully address the spectrum of writing concerns - grammar, organization, types of arguments, plagiarism, and citation style guides. There is also a series of handouts outlining the difference between a writing tutor and an editor; this distinction might be illuminating for anyone considering a visit to an Academic Resource Coordinator or a community tutor, as well as for students interested in teaching or peer tutoring. |
