Citing Information
When you are writing a college research paper, you use information and ideas that you have gathered from a variety of sources. You may use the information to back up your arguments, to survey the ideas of scholars who are doing research in the field, or to compare and contrast differing points of view. It is essential that you give proper credit to the people whose work or ideas you have quoted or summarized. If you do not, you are plagiarizing their work, which is a very serious breach of ethics and intellectual honesty. You also are required to be very careful to quote them accurately. In order to properly cite someone else's work or ideas, be sure to take down all of the necessary information from each source while you are doing your research. Otherwise, you may find yourself trying to create a list of references without sufficient information and without any practical means of obtaining it!

There are two reasons for providing a complete, accurate citation to all sources you have used in composing a research paper:

  1. You must give credit to the author or originator of ideas you have quoted; and
  2. You must make it possible for those who read your paper to find the cited information and examine it themselves.

While doing your research, gather the following information about the resources you use:

  • For a book:
    Author's name(s);
    Complete title of the book;
    Publisher;
    City of publication;
    Date of publication;
    Page numbers.
  • For a periodical (journal or newspaper):
    Author's name(s);
    Title of the journal or newspaper;
    Title of the article;
    Date of publication;
    Page numbers;
    Volume and issue number.
  • For an electronic source:
    Author's name(s);
    Title of page;
    URL (if a Webpage);
    Date and time accessed (if a Webpage);
    Name of provider or publisher (if a source such as EBSCOhost).
