Granite State College: University System of New Hampshire

DIRECT Pathway

DIRECT is a streamlined bachelor’s degree pathway that’s a good fit for you if you are a self-starter who is ready to connect your workplace knowledge with prior college credits.

Many adults like you decide to come back to college already knowing how to succeed. Finishing a bachelor’s degree is a key part of succeeding at the next level professionally and personally. Rewarding and efficient, our DIRECT pathway develops the advanced competencies needed for greater success in today’s challenging professions.

Once you’ve applied to your chosen bachelor’s degree program, you will automatically be eligible for the DIRECT Pathway if all three of the following are true for you:

  • You’ve earned a C or better in at least sixty credits of prior college courses, whether taken five years ago, or thirty-five years ago.
  • You have workplace or military training; college-equivalent learning acquired outside of a classroom setting; or competency you gained via job experiences, as a volunteer, or through open learning resources; or you’d like to demonstrate what you already know by passing a standardized exam in a subject area. These innovative alternatives, known as prior learning options, save many Granite State College students both time and tuition. DIRECT pathway students will successfully earn college credit with at least one prior learning option.
  • Soon into starting your Bachelor’s degree, you’ll enroll in a required course, Connecting to Your Major (CRIT 502). In successfully completing the course, you work directly with an experienced instructor on your personalized strategy for making the most of your degree program. What do you already do well? What’s the best way to demonstrate your competencies? How will you grow your knowledge through new courses, while wasting no time on the way to your goals?

Here's how it works...

Apply today to your chosen bachelor's degree major. As soon as you complete your application:

  1. Request official transcripts be sent to GSC Admissions from all prior colleges attended; you’ll need to ensure that Admissions receives official transcripts from any college you previously attended no later than one month after you apply to one of our Bachelor’s degree programs*.
  2. Click here to learn more about our options for prior learning, and follow the steps to ensure you receive any eligible pre-approved credit at the time of application;
  3. Call or email an academic coach when you register.  Your coach will advise you when to enroll in Connecting to Your Major (CRIT 502).  If you have earned an associate degree, CRIT 502 will usually be your first course.  If you have at least sixty credits but not an associate degree, your coach will recommend the best beginning course and the right time to take CRIT 502.

That’s all you need to do to be automatically eligible for DIRECT. Qualified students are notified once they have met the criteria for the DIRECT pathway. We will email you, with the choice to opt out. As with all of our programs, you’ll pursue your degree at your pace, in the format that works best for you.

You’ll have a clear and personalized pathway to completing your Bachelor’s degree in the most affordable and timely way.

*Transcript grades must be from regionally accredited colleges in order for transfer credit to be awarded. The DIRECT pathway is not available for most teacher preparation/teacher certification Bachelor’s degree programs in the School of Education.
