Granite State College: University System of New Hampshire

History (B.A.)

Discover trends, patterns, and differences through time periods, within nations, and across cultures. A Bachelor of Arts in History provides general rather than career-specific preparation, but the skills cultivated by the study of past and present are highly transferable to multiple fields that demand clear reasoning, articulate communication, information gathering and synthesis, and accuracy with detail. This liberal arts degree also provides a strong foundation for further graduate study. This B.A. does not provide teacher certification, but may serve as an appropriate foundation for individuals who plan to seek middle or secondary school Social Studies teacher certification through post-baccalaureate or master’s degree programs offered by other institutions.

Students will:

  • survey specific periods of historical development from pre-history to the present.
  • identify phenomena and characterize patterns across time and regions.
  • analyze U.S. History from the period of native peoples through the present.
  • explore world history, emphasizing major trends that influenced multiple nations and regions.
  • appreciate the contributions and experiences of diverse peoples to national and world events.
  • demonstrate aptitude with research methods and writing conventions in the discipline of history.

Flexible delivery formats such as evening, online, hybrid, and weekend intensive courses ensure that the program is accessible to working adults of all ages. In addition, this degree allows a seamless transition from the associate to the baccalaureate degree. See a list of required courses for this program on our Curriculum Map.
