Beloved Union Leader columnist and author, John Clayton, to appear at New England Notables Series, presented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Granite State College

Manchester, NH – Well-known for his reverence of the state’s rich history and his razor-sharp wit, Union Leader columnist and author John Clayton will share stories from his latest book, Remembering Manchester: Towering Titans & Unsung Heroes, at the next installment of New England Notables, a series presented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Granite State College.

Clayton will appear at the July 16 event at 10:30am at Granite State College’s newly opened Manchester campus at MillWest, 195 McGregor Street, where OLLI members – a collection of “students,” all over the age of 50, who are dedicated to lifelong learning, often gather for enriching classes, lessons and discussions.

Clayton’s latest book features snapshots of 32 of Manchester’s most remarkable residents, including fast food dynamo Richard McDonald (as in McDonald’s Restaurants), Iwo Jima flag-raiser Rene Gagnon, adored lunch cart driver Arthur “Red” Ullrich and late Manchester firefighter Dave Anderson.

“OLLI is pleased to welcome John back,” explained Virginia Martin, Director of OLLI at Granite State College. “Our members build their own programming, so when they decide they’d like to learn about ornithology or Tolstoy, glaciers or Shakespeare, they make it happen. And they certainly wanted to John Clayton to return – and to provide a venue for others to join in the conversation with John.”

The public is invited to the event, which costs just $10.

The national OLLI network began in 2000 with grants from the Bernard Osher Foundation to emphasize the importance of lifelong learning for everyone, at any age. The membership-driven OLLI program welcomes any participant over the age of 50 to its classes, where there aren’t any prerequisites or grades, but a genuine, widely held passion for learning. There are now 120 OLLIs in colleges and universities across the country.

The first and only OLLI in New Hampshire began in 2004 at Granite State College, which is one of four institutions of the University System of New Hampshire.  Now 700+ members strong, OLLI holds classes in four locations across the state, including Manchester, Concord, Conway and the Seacoast.

Past headliners of OLLI’s presentations series include Bill Gardner (NH Secretary of State), Hollis-based author Michaeline Della Fera and Mike Pride (former publisher of the Concord Monitor).

John Clayton’s new book will be available for sale at the event and he’ll sign copies for attendees. For more information or to make a reservation by July 8, visit www.granite.edu/olli or call 603.513.1377.
