ESCOTO RECEIVES MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

April 4, 2009- CONCORD- The Granite State College Alumni Learner Association recently awarded Wilson Escoto of North Attleboro, Massachusetts a $1,000 merit scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic achievement, thoughtful career path and dedication to achieving lifelong goals.

Escoto, a native of rural Honduras, currently maintains a 3.61 grade point average and is working toward his self-designed Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Social Studies Education at Granite State College.

Prior to returning to Honduras, Escoto spent five years as a teaching assistant with Easter Seals Jolicoeur School in Manchester.  He has taught special needs students in his homeland also and has completed much of his Granite State College coursework from Honduras via online classes.  Escoto hopes to pursue a career in special education following his graduation.

“My education will prepare me to be a teacher who is well-rounded, prepared and enthusiastic about teaching,” Escoto said.  “Whether in Honduras or the United States I will become a special education teacher and look forward to using my life and academic experience to benefit special needs children in at least two countries.”

Escoto is one of ten deserving Granite State College students selected this year by the ALA Board to receive an ALA Merit Scholarship.

“The awarding of these scholarships is truly an honor and a privilege that the board thoroughly enjoys,” said John Paine, Chairman of the ALA Board of Directors.  “Having the opportunity to actually make a difference in the life of a Granite State College learner is remarkable.”

More than $110,000 in scholarships has been awarded by the ALA to deserving Granite State College students since 1990.  Its scholarship program is funded by donations made by graduates of Granite State College.

In addition to their fundraising efforts, the Granite State College ALA also works together with current Granite State College students, faculty and staff to promote the College in the community and throughout the state and to support the institution’s educational mission.
