GRANITE STATE COLLEGE TO HONOR LIFELONG LEARNING ADVOCATE
Founder of the Bernard Osher Foundation to receive Honorary Doctoral Degree

April 4, 2009 - CONCORD - Granite State College will present California philanthropist and renowned lifelong learning advocate, Bernard Osher, with an honorary doctoral degree at this year’s graduation ceremony on Saturday, June 7 at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord.

As founder and treasurer of the Bernard Osher Foundation, Osher has demonstrated an ongoing dedication to improving the quality of life for people across the country through support of higher education and the arts.

Founded in 1997 and committed to the belief that learning should continue throughout life, The Bernard Osher Foundation supports a network of 121 Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes (OLLI) throughout the country and provides post-secondary scholarship funding to selected colleges and universities across the nation.  The Foundation also benefits programs in integrative medicine including centers at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Granite State College president, Dr. Karol LaCroix, will present Mr. Osher with the Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters in recognition of his dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and his ongoing support of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Granite State College.

“Bernard Osher has been a true friend to Granite State College and its Osher Lifelong Learning Institute,” LaCroix said.  “Students of all ages have benefited greatly from the generous support of the Bernard Osher Foundation.  I am honored to recognize the contributions Mr. Osher has made to lifelong learning with an honorary doctoral degree from Granite State College.”

OLLI at Granite State College, a member-driven organization that creates and provides intellectually stimulating lifelong learning opportunities for New Hampshire residents age 50 and above, began with a $100,000 grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation in 2004.  The Foundation’s generosity has continued over the years with an additional $350,000 in grants and last year’s gift of a $1 million endowment.  Currently, there are more than 600 OLLI members in the state benefiting from this program.

Funds from the Osher Foundation have also supported Granite State College’s Osher Re-entry Scholarship program.  Since its establishment in 2006, the Program has made the pursuit of higher education possible for 40 Granite State College students who are re-entering college after an absence of five years or more to finish their baccalaureate degree requirements.

Granite State College is one of four University System of New Hampshire institutions. The college offers courses and programs in nine different communities throughout the state and is committed to delivering affordable and convenient access to public higher education via innovative programming.  In addition to offering associate and bachelor degrees, post-baccalaureate programs for teacher education and transfer opportunities, Granite State College is also a leader in providing online degree programs.

OLLI at Granite State College is a member-based organization offering activities and classes designed by members with the goal of providing adults age 50 and above with learning opportunities in a college setting without prerequisites or grades – just learning for the fun of learning.
