BRUNEAU AWARDED GSC’S MAYNARD HECKEL AWARD

April 3, 2009 - CONCORD – The Granite State College Alumni Learner Association recently awarded Kim Bruneau of Bristol the 2009 Maynard Heckel Award and $500 scholarship in recognition of her ongoing leadership and commitment to the local and statewide community.
A senior majoring in Early Childhood Education at Granite State College, Bruneau maintains a 3.75 grade point average while working fulltime as the director of Tender Years Childcare and Learning Center.

“It is an extremely rewarding place to be, watching children grow and learn daily,” said Bruneau.  “Although early childhood is not a field where any of us will become rich, I cannot imagine doing anything else.”

Bruneau’s commitment to the wellbeing of children extends beyond her childcare classroom.  She is the mother of three grown children and an active member of the New Hampshire Association for the Education of Young Children, Early Learning New Hampshire and the Lakes Region Community College, Early Childhood Education Advisory Board.  Bruneau was also named 2001 Volunteer of the Year by Bristol’s Newfound Area Nursing Association.

Established in memory of the founding dean of Granite State College (originally known as the School of Continuing Studies), the Maynard Heckel Award recognizes those students who, like Bruneau, exemplify community leadership.

Since 1990 the ALA has awarded over $110,000 in scholarships to deserving Granite State College students.  Its scholarship program is funded through donations made by Granite State College graduates.

“The awarding of these scholarships is truly an honor and a privilege that the board thoroughly enjoys,” said John Paine, Chairman of the ALA Board of Directors.  “Having the opportunity to actually make a difference in the life of a Granite State College learner is remarkable.”

In addition to fund raising efforts, the Granite State College Alumni Learner Association also works together with current Granite State College students, faculty and staff to promote the College in the community and throughout the state and to support the institution’s educational mission.

Granite State College is one of four University System of New Hampshire institutions and a leader in online education.  It offers associate and bachelor degrees programs, post-baccalaureate programs for teacher education and transfer opportunities.
