Celebrating Academic Excellence
Granite State College Inducts 40 Members into Its Honor Society, Alpha Sigma Lambda

Concord, NH – On Sunday March 4, 2012, Granite State College recognized 40 students and their induction into its chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the distinguished honor society that aims to recognize the special achievements of adults who accomplish academic excellence while facing competing interests of home and work.

The inducted students, their family and friends, faculty, staff, and administrators filled the room as Chris Benedetto, a History Lecturer at the Rochester and Portsmouth campuses, delivered faculty remarks. Benedetto, a popular instructor with expertise in New England history, the European Reformation, the birth and spread of Christianity, and ancient Egypt, reflected on memorable class discussions and inspirational experiences with his students, three of which were being inducted that day.

As part of the traditional Alpha Sigma Lambda ceremony, each student was invited to stand and speak briefly about their academic journey and acknowledge the individuals who have helped them succeed. They shared stories about the support of their significant others, children, siblings, friends, academic coaches, Granite State College staff, instructors, and one student even thanked her employer who granted the flexibility she needed in her work schedule to pursue her degree. Although the students vary in age, have different backgrounds, and represent a spectrum of academic concentrations; through their remarks they shared the same values that Granite State College and Alpha Sigma Lambda celebrate: a love of learning, recognition that learning does not begin or end with formal schooling, and the true scholar’s understanding of intellectual curiosity and academic excellence as gifts to be shared.
