NH College & University Presidents to Join World Record Attempt
New Hampshire College and University Presidents to Join World Record Attempt
Jumpstart’s Read For The Record Event Held Nationwide October 4th
Concord, NH - It’s almost as easy as learning your ABCs. Recent studies show that if a child grows up in a home filled with books, that child has a 20% greater chance of graduating with a college degree as an adult. The link between early childhood learning and success in later years is well documented.
That’s why New Hampshire’s college and university presidents will join young children in classrooms around the state for Jumpstart’s Read for the Record initiative. This is a world-record-breaking campaign in which adults and children nationwide will read the same book on the same day to establish the largest group of people ever to collectively read the same story on a single date.
The Read for the Record event features readings of the New York Times bestselling children’s book, Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad by David Soman and Jacky Davis.
Each student in the participating classes will be presented with their own copy of the book to take home and share. This national reading initiative is presented in partnership with the Pearson Foundation and as part of a national effort to close the early education achievement gap.
Tom Horgan, President of the New Hampshire College & University Council said, “It’s a great demonstration of higher education and K-12 institutions working together to send the message that reading is an essential skill for all students.”
Dr. Todd J. Leach, President of Granite State College, will visit Bow Elementary School and read to 40 Kindergarten students at 8:30 a.m.
In addition to the 17 higher education institutions and their Presidents, New Hampshire’s First Lady Dr. Susan Lynch will participate at NHTI, Concord’s Community College, by reading to students at the NHTI Early Learning Center.
