GRANITE STATE COLLEGE ALUMNI AWARD OUTSTANDING STUDENTS

April 2, 2008 - CONCORD –Members of the Granite State College Alumni Learner Association Board of Directors have awarded this year’s ALA Merit Scholarships and Maynard Heckel Award to a select group of outstanding Granite State students in recognition of the students’ academic accomplishments and commitment to community leadership.

ALA Merit Scholarships of $1,000 were awarded to 10 students who exemplify outstanding academic performance, embrace a thoughtful career path and demonstrate a dedication to achieving lifelong goals.

Recipients included Scottie  Alley, Georgetown, KY; Pamela Brooks, South Berwick, ME; Wendy Covill, Bloomfield, VT; Priscilla Davis, Epping; Robert Frasca, Nashua; Suzanne Fraser, Fairlee, VT; Richard Fuller, N. Springfield, VT; Lauren Maloof, Derry, NH; Matthew Partington, Loudon and Ruth Tappin, Barrington.
Named for the founding dean of Granite State College (originally known as the School of Continuing Studies), the Maynard Heckel Award and its $500 scholarship was awarded to Doris Shedd of Andover, NH in recognition of her ongoing leadership and commitment to the local and statewide community. 

"The awarding of these scholarships is truly an honor and a privilege that the board thoroughly enjoys," said John Paine, Chair of the ALA Board of Directors. 

"Each board member, having gone through the non-traditional college education process, understands the passion, desire and dedication that these students put not only into their education but also into their personal and professional lives. Granite State College should be extremely proud of not only these scholarship recipients, but every student enrolled. It is evident that the caliber of the students attending GSC is outstanding.

Comprised of graduates of Granite State College, the Granite State College Alumni Learner Association works together with current students, faculty and staff to promote the College in the community and throughout the state and to support the institution’s educational mission.

The ALA has awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to deserving Granite State College students since 1990.  Its scholarship program is funded through donations made by the more than 8,000Granite State College graduates.
